It used to be composed in French beginning in 1782, after which translated into English by Reverend Samuel Henley during which form it used to be first published in 1786 without Beckford’s name as An Arabian Tale, From an Unpublished Manuscript, claiming to be translated in an instant from Arabic. The primary French edition, titled simply as Vathek, used to be published in December 1786 (postdated 1787).Within the twentieth century some editions come with The Episodes of Vathek (Vathek et ses épisodes), three related tales intended by Beckford to be so incorporated, but omitted from the unique edition and published one at a time long after his death
