Reading is a big step for any child to learn, and it can also be a daunting one. Especially when the adults in children’s lives are waiting for their child to start. These pressures and expectations can lead to a loss of enthusiasm and excitement in a child wanting to learn how to read. Feeling like they can’t meet these, the desire or readiness to read often disappears. So, it is up to us as adults, whether we are parents, grandparents, older siblings, or teachers to try and find new ways to make reading an enjoyable experience that will encourage children to want to sit down and read together.
Popcorn Reading
Here is a way that helps with learning new words and re-enforcing the ones that they already know, by reading a book together. One of you start reading, then when the one who is reading says popcorn, it is the other person turn to read. This way, if the child comes across any words that are causing concern they can switch out with you and have you read the words for them. There by learning from you.
Reading Buddy
Reading buddies are a great way to ease a child nervousness about reading to an adult. Pair them with a peer or perhaps an older sibling. As we all know, there are times when reading to peers or siblings is less daunting then reading to parents or teachers, especially when in need of help when reading.
Highlight Heaven
A small boost in confidence goes a long way. In this way, you take an older book and have your child go through and highlight all the words that they can read. After they have finished sit down with them and go through and show them how many they highlighted. This will give them more encouragement to keep going.
Flashlight Reading
Now who doesn’t love to read at night. Sneak in a page or two when you were supposed to be in bed? Well this is a great way to read with you child. Take a flashlight, get comfortable and read by flashlight.
Secret Hideout
Ah a marker of any childhood, the fort! At one time or another we all did it. The fort of pillows, the under the bed fort, the cubbyhouse outside. No matter where the fort is or what it is made of, it is a good place to sit and read with your child. (Just make sure that you have the password needed to enter). Then grab a book and read away.
Reading Corner
Who doesn’t love a perfect spot to read in? Close to all the books but comfortable enough that it makes you want to keep reading. Make a place like this in your home and have your children pitch in with decorating it so that it is a place for everyone to come.
Take a break and just read to your child sometimes

Picture Detective
Time to play detective, and who doesn’t wat to be a super sleuth? Pick a book and have your child goes through and look only at the pictures. Then once finished, ask them what they think he story was about. Now go through and read it with them to see how close they were.
Pop-up word
Here is one for those children who prefer to be up and about, touching and feeling everything, when they are doing something. The kinesthetic learners of the world. Pick a word that they are having difficulties with, then every time that word comes up and they read it, stand up. Doing this action will help with memory as they will associate the word with the action.
Sometimes all it takes to make reading fun is a little bit of imagination.
